Tonebase brings more than 300 of the best piano teachers in the world together in one place so that amateur and professional players alike can get the instruction they both need and want safely in the time of the pandemic. The tutorial videos coach pianists of all levels through techniques both for performance and practice. Many of the teachers also take students through famous pieces, such as Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C-sharp Minor.

The website became active in 2019 after the creator and pianist Garrick Ohlsson met for coffee and a piano geek-out session. Since that germ of an idea, the website has blossomed. The creator of the site is also one of its instructors. His philosophy is to root the development of physical technique in the realm of expressiveness. He teaches this way to avoid the “great technique with nothing to say” phenomenon of one-sided pianists.
