At an age when most professional musicians have hung it up, pianist Martha Argerich (80) is still going strong. After eight decades of life, she has a well-developed sense of both history and performance that few can match. She is both Argentinian and Jewish, but her playing exhibited a mastery that was without borders. Even Horowitz played her recordings and jested to his friends that it was he on the recording. Coming from someone with that kind of monumental ego, such a quip is the ultimate praise.

Last year, she played a dozen live concerts online for her global fans. Ever beguiling and powerful, she wowed them with artistry that hasn’t lost a 16th note let alone a step. More than 30 years removed from beating cancer, she is still a world-conquering musical hero to musicians of all levels, ages, and specialties.
